Information: Henry VIII was born on the 28th of June 1491 at Greenwich Palace. He was best known for his tumultuous love life (he had six wives and many mistresses) and the establishment of the Church of England. He is also credited with creating a Royal Armoury and Navy with his flagship, The Mary Rose, sinking outside the harbour at Portsmouth.
At the beginning of Henry VIII’s reign his coins were minted in gold and silver. The denominations were a farthing worth a quarter of a penny, a half penny, a penny, a groat worth four pennies and a gold Angel coin which was worth 120 pennies. Half-pennies were also made by cutting a penny in half. A farthing was a quarter of a penny, made by cutting a penny into quarters. In similar fashion, two pence could be made by cutting a groat in half and a Half-Angel was half an Angel coin.
